Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic is also a speaker. She founded Feminist Frequency, a site that features videos and comments on the representations of women in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American media critic and blog writer who has been awarded prizes for her work, is a feminist blogger. Feminist Frequency, a website for education that examines women's roles in pop culture narratives was the result of her research. The site also has the director of operations. Committed to deconstructing the stereotypes of women that have been portrayed in popular culture, she works to highlight issues related to targeted exploitation of women and the other marginalized groups of individuals in the internet environment. Sarkeesian also holds a York University master's in social philosophy, political and philosophical thinking. Alongside being an acclaimed public speaker, she's given speeches at the TEDxWomen The XOXO Conference as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. She was interested in the gender issue and feminist movements at a young stage of her life. In 2009, when she was still studying at university she launched the Feminist Frequency site. She had a plan to launch an internet series on gender representation in games, however, she was also the subject of an online harassment campaign. It was not enough to halt her. In fact, it increased her importance to be a feminist as well as media critique. Her numerous contributions to the feminist field were recognized by a variety of prizes. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the founder of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization focused on the portrayal of women in popular cultural stories.
