
Julie London (nee Peck; September 26, 1926 - October 18 1999) was an American actress and singer with a career that spanned over 40 years. A torch performer renowned for her sultry, languid contralto vocals, London recorded over thirty albums of pop and jazz standards between 1955 between 1955 and 1969. Inducted into The Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001, she recorded "Cry me a river" the track she had included on her debut album. London was also nominated in 1974 for the Golden Globe Award for her performance as Dixie McCall, a nurse on the television show Emergency! Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she started her acting career. London's acting career lasted for 35 years and began in 1944 , with roles in films. They included roles as the female lead in a variety of westerns. London also starred alongside Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958), and Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). The singer signed a recording contract with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This marked the beginning of her professional career in music. Her final album of studio recordings in 1969 but continued to have success as the female starring role of nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency! (1972-1979), where she was a co-star alongside Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband also produced the show.
